Frequently asked questions
What is an apprenticeship?
Work while you learn and learn while you work. You’ll learn from experts and peers how to become a legit specialty coffee barista. Then you’re going to train others once you get it all down. Our apprenticeship opportunity lasts 12 months.
Is it paid?
Yes. Both shift work and learning sessions are paid. You will earn an average of $21.50/hr (including tips)
What are the hours you work in this job?
Our shops are open 6:30 AM – 4 PM every day of the week. You need to be able to work a mixture of opening and closing shifts to be an apprentice here. We also have required, paid training regularly.
What does the 3-day training entail?
It’s our version of an interview. We will get to know each other over three days, we’ll pay you a stipend, and we can see if the apprenticeship is a good fit right now. You will learn about Prodigy’s culture, how we think about work and learning a bit differently, and some Intro to Craft Coffee sessions.
How do I get hired?
Show up. Apply. If you fit the mold of an ‘ideal candidate’ (see below), one of our apprentice leaders will reach out with an invitation to come in for a coffee date. This coffee date is a “get to know you,” where you will receive the information for our upcoming 3-day pre-apprenticeship training. Complete the entire training and you are now eligible for hire. We hire 4-6 new apprentices every 8-12 weeks.
How many hours a week is this opportunity?
Typically 20-25 hrs per week. We do keep this opportunity part-time, so we can maximize the number of folks on our team. When you start, the hours are a little less, but there will be times there might be a little more.
Who is the ideal candidate for the apprenticeship?
18-24-year-olds looking to do something different in work and learning. If you haven’t felt you have been a perfect fit in school or work, this could be the perfect place for you. If you can get excited about learning coffee at a craft level, but are even more excited to learn and grow as a person, this could work really well. If you grew up or currently live by one of our shops, please consider applying!
Do I have to have coffee experience?
Nope. In fact, we don’t care if you like coffee or not. You just gotta be willing to learn all about it and become an expert in brewing it.
